Women Sport Initiatives

At Wood Buffalo Sport Connection, we are proud to be organizing a growing number of female-focused programs—initiatives designed to create welcoming, inclusive, and empowering spaces for women and girls to get involved in sport.

We believe that every girl & woman deserves the opportunity to discover the confidence, strength, and sense of community that sport can offer. Whether someone is just starting out or returning to activity after time away, our programs are built to support all skill levels in an environment that prioritizes encouragement, accessibility, and fun! Funding for all female sport initiatives is supported by the Government of Alberta and Jumpstart Charities.

Girls with Grit

Girls with Grit

The Girls with Grit Sport Summit, launched in September 2024, is a two-day event designed to empower girls and combat the high dropout rate from sports among young females.

The 2025 summit will take place on June 14–15 at MacDonald Island Park and is open to girls ages 8–14, offering engaging activities, skill-building sessions, and inspirational talks for just $25, thanks to support from Kidsport.

Participants will enjoy meals, gifts, and a ticket to a local sports game, with travel support available for those coming from surrounding communities.

Women Sport Passport

Women Sport Passport

The Women Sport Passport program invites women aged 18+ to explore various sports in a fun, supportive, and non-competitive setting, with structured warm-ups, instruction, and scrimmage time.

While participants are active, children aged 3–10 can join free play sessions led by Sport Leaders at no extra cost, available only to those registered for the full program.

The program runs Fridays from April 25 to June 13 (excluding May 16) for $60, or $15 per drop-in session.

3 v 3 Basketball

3 v 3 Basketball

This women’s basketball program is all about having fun, staying active, and playing recreational ball in a supportive space. It’s a great way to connect with other women, build your skills, and feel more confident on the court—whether you’re just starting out or have been playing for years.

The small-team format keeps things fast-paced and engaging, and most of all, it’s about getting more women involved and enjoying the game together.

Women Sport Circle

Women Sport Circle

The Women Sport Circle is a free program that empowers volunteers and community leaders to enhance sport experiences for women of all ages and backgrounds in the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region.

Members—ranging from athletes to coaches to passionate supporters—are provided with tools and resources to drive positive change and promote lifelong participation in sport.

They help create inclusive, supportive environments by engaging in discussions, guiding programs, staying informed on current trends, and breaking down barriers to female participation in sport.

She Leads the Way

She Leads the Way

The She Leads the Way Mentorship Program connects experienced female coaches and officials with young women who are just beginning their journey in sport leadership. Through meaningful, one-on-one mentorship, participants gain skills, confidence, and a strong support system as they grow into future coaches, referees, and leaders.

Sport organizations with female mentors will be compensated for their involvement, helping to recognize the time and impact of their commitment. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive future for women in sport—one connection at a time.
