Jon Turner

Chair

Growing up in a small rural Canadian community, the importance of sport has always resonated with me. Playing ice hockey, softball, badminton, and many other sports as a kid helped me, not only maintain my physical health, but also expanded on my collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. The greater importance of sport; however, is that it connects and builds stronger communities whether it is for play or entertainment and it is inclusive of all walks of life.
The Wood Buffalo Sports Connection (WBSC) is focused on doing just that. We are strategically aligned to concentrate on 3 areas, we call pillars: people in sport, sport information, as well as sport advocacy.
I have resided in the Municipality of Wood Buffalo now for over 18 years and consider this great region my home. I have also been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters which was a very rewarding experience and allowed me to utilize the skills developed through sport.
I would like to thank the Municipality of Wood Buffalo for their continued support, the members of this amazing board (current and past) and our Sport Partnership Manager for their dedication and rigor, as well as members of our community who are involved in the different sport organizations, volunteers, or attendees of our community sporting events.
I am proud to be a member of this diverse community and I am extremely grateful to fill the position of Vice Chair for this board. Thank you!

Past Chairman

Being a founding member of the WBSC, I have seen this organization grow from a talked about idea to providing support to the sporting community within the region.   The WBSC will help to build strong community foundations through sport.

I have lived in Fort McMurray for the past 24 years and been involved in multiple sports and supported various sporting events from provincial to international that have taken place within the region.  I currently represent the McMurray Oldtimers Hockey Association.

Secretary

I am the owner of Kore Athletic Therapy and the Head Athletic Therapist for the Keyano College Huskies Sports teams.

I have always been connected to sports my whole life. I was born and raised in Fort McMurray and competed in multiple sports growing up. I started doing gymnastics young and continued until I was 12 at Norfort. I played ringette, soccer, did competitive dance at generation dance, competed in a lot of school sports growing up to eventually choose Volleyball as my favourite. I continued playing in college and University getting scholarships for school. Playing volleyball in post secondary gave me experiences and skills that I would have never got if I was not involved in sports growing up. Sport also helped me choose a career that I absolutely love and keeps me involved in the sporting world. The friends and joy of physical activity are huge bonuses in a sedentary society we live in today.

As a board member I want to help with connecting people to sport in our community and help them find the love and joy that I did. My fiancé and I want to start a family in the future and I would love to have my kids enjoy a multitude of sports. As a board member I can help grow the sporting community giving more opportunity for everyone and it allows for me to give back to a community that gave me a lot.

Treasurer

I am currently a REALTOR with RE/MAX Fort McMurray

I currently do not have any roles within the sporting community. Although I want to be involved in some compacity because I absolutely love sports! Hockey being number 1 and basketball. Volleyball, skiing, and swimming would be my most promident. I didn't mention MMA as I'm not sure if you all consider this a sport. But, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Ju Jitsu is a love of mine for all my life.

I want to be a board member because I want to make an impact in the sporting community. Especially the up and coming stars - our kids! I want to give back in this capacity as I feel I can assist in developing and helping. I can help this organization with my background in accounting/bookkeeping and office administration. I have an honours diploma in accounting, computers and business administration. I reached Level 4 of the CGA program and hold now (wow!) 24 years experience in various roles of each before mentioned.
