March Community Champion of the Month, Barbara Fitzpatrick Interview:

Barb was nominated for her sports inclusivity initiatives. This includes a hockey program for children with barriers to give them an opportunity to learn the game. She’s also helped get the inclusive baseball team set up. Her son has overcome many barriers and Barb has been there every step of the way!

What was your reaction to being named community champion of the month?

My reaction was very surprised and then so happy my efforts are being seen in a positive matter and enough that they would want to nominate me.

Why is it important for you to help set up sport programs for those with disabilities?

It’s so important to me as a mom with a child with cerebral palsy, I want to give him ever opportunity like typical kids to play the sport he loved with his peers, having fun and socializing

What do you believe sport is able to provide to children? And why are sports important to you?

Sports are so important in so many ways. It keeps you active and you build life long friendship. You learn how to be a teen player and be a good person overall.

What is the most important trait you believe every good sports parent should have?

The best trait in my opinion is to always cheer them on though wins and loses and to always have a positive attitude and it will carry over into your everyday life.
