Interview with May's Community Champion of the Month - Logan Wiley
What made you want to help coach with the Coldwell Banker Inclusive Royals?
When I heard about the Royals program being developed in Fort McMurray I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I have been involved in minor hockey since I was 4 and have grown up with a love of the sport and the camaraderie of the hockey community, so to be able to bring those elements into an inclusive environment is really meaningful to me.
As a high school student, you must have a pretty busy schedule, how do you juggle school, homework, sports, and volunteering to coach?
I have been really fortunate to be able to participate in several activities, and I am a night owl so I always have time at the end of the day to catch up with family and friends. I previously completed some of my grade 9-12 courses so my homework load is actually very light this year in grade 9, and that gives me the ability to really prioritize my extra curricular commitments.
What is one of your favourite experiences that you've had while coaching kids?
Something that will always stay with me was the opportunity to work with an amazing young girl who joined the program originally with a sledge. As we developed her skills and confidence, I was able to celebrate a massive achievement with her as she skated upright without any assistance this past season. Seeing all of the team work hard despite a new and challenging environment and their smiles is a great experience.
What are common fears that kids have when learning to play hockey and what is one strategy you use to help kids overcome their fears?
One of the biggest things to overcome is all of the sensory components that go along with the game- like skates and gear to the temperature and sounds of the arena, it can all be overwhelming especially for those who are sensitive to change. My main strategy is to stay patient and positive and encourage any step forward towards a goal, no matter how small the step may seem.
What are two other goals that you have for sport right now? (Could be related to your own athlete career, coaching career, or other)
I am looking forward to continuing coaching with the Royals, and plan to stay with them until I leave for University. My personal goal is to branch out and try a few new programs as well, such as TaeKwon Do. I also intend to continue volunteering with both youth sports and diverse kids, and would love to help develop similar programs in communities that are not yet as inclusive as Fort McMurray.
You've been nominated quite a few times since we started the Community Champion celebration. Are you shocked that you were nominated? What would you like to say to those that nominated you?
There are so many people that have worked hard to create this program, it is very humbling to be nominated. It was a huge surprise and I would like to thank everyone that nominated me and I hope that this creates more conversation and awareness about inclusive opportunities in our city. Thank you so much.
