SEPTEMBER 2022 SPORT ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHT

on the Fort McMurray Roller Derby League

WHO: Who can get involved in your program? (ages groups, etc.) Who can people contact about the organization? (Please also list your social media handles)

Fort McMurray Roller Derby Offers beginner skating training and roller derby sport training for all genders aged 7 and up. Our adult program also offers training to on and off skate officiating roles. Roller derby is a unique sport, and we offer many different ways for people to join our community and learn!
You can ask us for more information, check out our website www.fmrollerderby.com, Facebook https://www.facebook.com/fmrollerderby and Instagram @fmrdl. Contact us via social media or email info@fmrollerderby.com

WHAT: What is Fort McMurray Roller Derby all about? What do you do when you sign up?

The league consists of the Tar Sand Betties, a competitive women’s travel team, the Crude Assassins, a mixed-gender adult team, and the Athabashers, a mixed-gender junior team.
FMRDL welcomes all genders ages 7+, various shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. Zero skills are required! Safety is our first priority so we take a staged approach to the training process on how to skate. This allows individuals to learn at their own pace including the necessary skills and protective gear to help reduce injuries. A non-skating option as an official is also available.

WHEN: When would you practice and when would you compete?

Practices take place Sunday 4-5pm, Tuesday and Thursday 7-8pm. The competition season runs Feb-July and Sept-Dec. The junior skaters will always end the season with a Black vs White game. The adult travel teams compete heavily in the Spring, switching to local competitive play in the Fall.

WHERE: Where do you run your programs?

Practices and games take place at MacDonald Island Park or Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre

WHY: Why did you start up this organization? Why should people sign up?

FMRDL was started by a group of ambitious women looking to find a place in sport back in 2010. Through the years we have evolved to be more inclusive both with gender and age, providing options for all.
Roller derby is a newer and exciting sport! Being a new sport, there is no experience needed, and you will not be competing against athletes who have been playing for 20+ years, everyone started recently and is still learning! As a small local organization, we provided plenty of small group sessions, meaning the skater will have lots of time to work with coaches. A fun place to meet new people, build teamwork skills, and come out of your shell. There is no "type" in roller derby. Everyone succeeds!
